Martin Luther King Jr
A labor of love was formed to ensure community members were able to bury their deceased loved ones in a respectful manner during a time when there were little or no mortuaries for people of color. The members worked diligently in the cotton fields planting, harvesting, and picking cotton around their own work schedule to earn money for the Society. Most members were tenant farmers or had government claims; in which, they had to work harder or longer hours as fair wages were not often given.
The average cotton picking time was from sunrise to sunset. In 1922, cotton farming was a very laborious crop. Farmers were paid 50 cent for a bale of cotton. On the average, a bale of cotton was 480 pounds of cotton. The Society also assisted families in the community during difficult times and with burial of the deceased.
Today the Society still performs this labor of love by offering:
·charitable donations to different organizations or individuals in need·scholarships for high school seniors who meet the criteria·death payment for deceased member beneficiary
